Chapter 2

2.1
Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking, as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious: coming to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.
5.1
You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
6.1
Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious: He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”
7.1
For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,” and, “a stumbling stone and a rock of offense.”
8.1
For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.
9.1
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.
10.1
In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people,
10.2
who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.
11.1
Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

Chapter 3

Chapter 2

1
Putting away therefore all wickedness, all deceit, hypocrisies, envies, and all evil speaking,
Putting[G2532] away[G142] therefore[G3767] all[G3956] wickedness,[G2549] all[G3956] deceit,[G1388] hypocrisies,[G5272] envies,[G5355] and[G2532] all[G3956] evil[G2549] speaking,[G2980]
2
as newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the Word, that with it you may grow,
as[G5613] newborn[G738] babies,[G1025] long[G1971] for[G1519] the[G1722] pure[G2513] spiritual[G3050] milk,[G1051] that[G2443] with[G1722] it[G2443] you[G1722] may[G2443] grow,[G837]
3
if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious:
if[G1487] indeed[G2532] you[G1487] have[G3748] tasted[G1089] that[G3754] the[G3588] Lord[G2962] is[G3588] gracious.[G5543]
4
coming to him, a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God, precious.
Come[G4334] to[G4314] him,[G3739] a[G1161] living[G2198] stone,[G3037] rejected[G593] indeed[G3303] by[G5259] men,[G3739] but[G1161] chosen[G1588] by[G5259] God,[G2316] precious.[G1784]
5

You also, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

You[G2532] also[G2532] as[G5613] living[G2198] stones[G3037] are[G2532] built[G3618] up[G1519] as[G5613] a[G5613] spiritual[G4152] house,[G3624] to[G1519] be[G2532] a[G5613] holy[G40] priesthood,[G2406] to[G1519] offer[G4374] up[G1519] spiritual[G4152] sacrifices,[G2378] acceptable[G2144] to[G1519] God[G2316] through[G1223] Jesus[G2424] Christ.[G5547]
6

Because it is contained in Scripture, “Behold,[1] I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, chosen and precious: He who believes in him will not be disappointed.”[1]

Because[G1360] it[G2532] is[G3588] contained[G4023] in[G1722] Scripture,[G1124] “Behold,[G2400] I[G2532] lay[G5087] in[G1722] Zion[G4622] a[G2532] chief[G2532] cornerstone,[G204] chosen[G1588] and[G2532] precious.[G1784] He[G2532] who[G3588] believes[G4100] in[G1722] him[G3588] will[G2532] not[G3756] be[G2532] disappointed.”[G2617]
7

For you who believe therefore is the honor, but for those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone,”[1]

For[G1519] you[G5210] who[G3739] believe[G4100] therefore[G3767] is[G3588] the[G2532] honor,[G5092] but[G1161] for[G1519] those[G3588] who[G3739] are[G3588] disobedient,[G545] “The[G2532] stone[G3037] which[G3739] the[G2532] builders[G3618] rejected[G593] has[G3739] become[G1096] the[G2532] chief[G2776] cornerstone,”[G2776]
8

and, “a stumbling stone and a rock of offense.”[1] For they stumble at the word, being disobedient, to which also they were appointed.

and,[G2532] “a[G2532] stumbling[G4625] stone[G3037] and[G2532] a[G2532] rock[G4073] of[G3056] offense.”[G4625] For[G1519] they[G2532] stumble[G4350] at[G1519] the[G2532] word,[G3056] being[G2532] disobedient,[G545] to[G1519] which[G3739] also[G2532] they[G2532] were[G3588] appointed.[G5087]
9

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

But[G1161] you[G5210] are[G3588] a[G1519] chosen[G1588] race,[G1085] a[G1519] royal[G937] priesthood,[G2406] a[G1519] holy[G40] nation,[G1484] a[G1519] people[G2992] for[G1519] God’s[G2316] own[G2398] possession,[G4047] that[G3588] you[G5210] may[G1484] proclaim[G1804] the[G1519] excellence[G703] of[G1537] him[G3588] who[G3588] called[G2564] you[G5210] out[G1537] of[G1537] darkness[G4655] into[G1519] his[G1519] marvelous[G2298] light.[G5457]
10

In the past, you were not a people, but now are God’s people, who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

In[G2316] the[G1161] past,[G4218] you[G3739] were[G3588] not[G3756] a[G1161] people,[G2992] but[G1161] now[G1161] are[G3588] God’s[G2316] people,[G2992] who[G3739] had[G2316] not[G3756] obtained[G3568] mercy,[G1653] but[G1161] now[G1161] have[G1653] obtained[G3568] mercy.[G1653]
11
Beloved, I beg you as foreigners and pilgrims, to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Beloved,[G27] I[G2532] beg[G3870] you[G2532] as[G5613] foreigners[G3941] and[G2532] pilgrims[G3927] to[G2532] abstain[G568] from[G2532] fleshly[G4559] lusts[G1939] which[G3588] war[G4754] against[G2596] the[G2532] soul,[G5590]
12
having good behavior among the nations, so in that of which they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they see, glorify God in the day of visitation.
having[G2192] good[G2570] behavior[G2041] among[G1722] the[G1722] nations,[G1484] so[G2443] in[G1722] that[G2443] of[G1537] which[G3739] they[G3588] speak[G2635] against[G1722] you[G5210] as[G5613] evildoers,[G2555] they[G3588] may[G2443] see[G3708] your[G2192] good[G2570] works[G2041] and[G2316] glorify[G1392] God[G2316] in[G1722] the[G1722] day[G2250] of[G1537] visitation.[G1984]
13
Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme;
Therefore[G1223] subject[G5293] yourselves[G5293] to[G5293] every[G3956] ordinance[G2937] of[G1223] man[G3956] for[G1223] the[G3956] Lord’s[G2962] sake:[G1223] whether[G1535] to[G5293] the[G3956] king,[G3588] as[G5613] supreme,[G5242]
14
or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.
or[G1535] to[G1519] governors,[G2232] as[G5613] sent[G3992] by[G1223] him[G1519] for[G1519] vengeance[G1557] on[G1519] evildoers[G2555] and[G1161] for[G1519] praise[G1868] to[G1519] those[G1161] who[G3992] do[G1223] well.[G5613]
15
For this is the will of God, that by well-doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:
For[G3754] this[G3588] is[G1510] the[G3588] will[G2307] of[G2316] God,[G2316] that[G3754] by[G1510] well-doing[G15] you[G3754] should[G2316] put[G5392] to[G2316] silence[G5392] the[G3588] ignorance[G52] of[G2316] foolish[G3474] men.[G3588]
16
as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.
Live[G2532] as[G5613] free[G1658] people,[G3588] yet[G2532] not[G3361] using[G2192] your[G2192] freedom[G1657] for[G2532] a[G2192] cloak[G2440] of[G2316] wickedness,[G2549] but[G2532] as[G5613] bondservants of[G2316] God.[G2316]
17
Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.
Honor[G5091] all[G3956] men.[G3956] Love[G26] the[G3956] brotherhood.[G81] Fear[G5399] God.[G2316] Honor[G5091] the[G3956] king.[G3588]
18
Servants, be in subjection to your masters with all respect: not only to the good and gentle, but also to the wicked.
Servants,[G3610] be[G2532] in[G1722] subjection[G5293] to[G2532] your[G2532] masters[G1203] with[G1722] all[G3956] respect,[G5401] not[G3756] only[G3440] to[G2532] the[G1722] good[G3956] and[G2532] gentle,[G1933] but[G2532] also[G2532] to[G2532] the[G1722] wicked.[G3588]
19
For it is commendable if someone endures pain, suffering unjustly, because of conscience toward God.
For[G1063] it[G1063] is[G2316] commendable[G2570] if[G1487] someone[G5100] endures[G5297] pain,[G3077] suffering[G3958] unjustly,[G95] because[G1223] of[G1223] conscience[G4893] toward[G4893] God.[G2316]
20
For what glory is it if, when you sin, you patiently endure beating? But if, when you do well, you patiently endure suffering, this is commendable with God.
For[G1063] what[G4169] glory[G2811] is[G2316] it[G2532] if,[G1487] when[G2532] you[G1487] sin,[G266] you[G1487] patiently[G5278] endure[G5278] beating?[G5180] But[G2532] if[G1487] when[G2532] you[G1487] do[G2532] well,[G2532] you[G1487] patiently[G5278] endure[G5278] suffering,[G3958] this[G3778] is[G2316] commendable[G2570] with[G3844] God.[G2316]
21
For you were called to this, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you[1] an example, that you should follow his steps,
For[G1063] you[G5210] were[G3588] called[G2564] to[G1519] this,[G3778] because[G3754] Christ[G5547] also[G2532] suffered[G3958] for[G1063] us,[G1519] leaving[G5277] you[G5210] an[G2532] example,[G5261] that[G3754] you[G5210] should[G3588] follow[G1872] his[G1519] steps,[G2487]
22
who didn’t sin, “neither was deceit found in his mouth.”[1]
who[G3739] didn’t[G3756] sin,[G266] “neither[G3761] was[G3588] deceit[G1388] found[G2147] in[G1722] his[G1722] mouth.”[G4750]
23
When he was cursed, he didn’t curse back. When he suffered, he didn’t threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously.
When[G1161] he[G1161] was[G3588] cursed,[G1944] he[G1161] didn’t[G3756] curse[G2671] back.[G3825] When[G1161] he[G1161] suffered,[G3958] he[G1161] didn’t[G3756] threaten,[G546] but[G1161] committed[G3860] himself[G1438] to[G3756] him[G3588] who[G3739] judges[G2919] righteously.[G1346]
24
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. You were healed by his wounds.[1]
He[G3739] himself[G1438] bore[G4160] our[G1722] sins[G266] in[G1722] his[G1909] body[G4983] on[G1909] the[G1722] tree,[G3586] that[G2443] we,[G2249] having[G2192] died[G3588] to[G2443] sins,[G266] might[G1473] live[G2198] to[G2443] righteousness.[G1343] You[G3739] were[G3588] healed[G2390] by[G1722] his[G1909] wounds.[G3468]
25
For you were going astray like sheep; but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer[1] of your souls.
For[G1063] you[G5210] were[G1510] going[G2532] astray[G4105] like[G5613] sheep;[G4263] but[G2532] now[G3568] you[G5210] have[G2532] returned[G1994] to[G2532] the[G2532] Shepherd[G4166] and[G2532] Overseer[G1985] of[G2532] your[G2532] souls.[G5590]

Chapter 3

1
In the same way, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any don’t obey the Word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word,
2
seeing your pure behavior in fear.
3
Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing;
4
but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.
5
For this is how in the past, the holy women who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands.
6
So Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are, if you do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.
7
You husbands, in the same way, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as also being joint heirs of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
8
Finally, all of you be like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, courteous,
9
not rendering evil for evil, or insult for insult; but instead blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing.
10
For, “He who would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.
