Chapter 8
1
Now concerning things sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
Now[G1161] concerning[G4012] things[G3956] sacrificed[G1494] to[G1161] idols:[G1494] We[G3754] know[G1492] that[G3754] we[G3754] all[G3956] have[G2192] knowledge.[G1108] Knowledge[G1108] puffs up,[G5448] but[G1161] love[G26] builds[G3618] up.[G5448]
2
But if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he doesn’t yet know as he ought to know.
But[G1487] if[G1487] anyone[G5100] thinks[G1380] that[G1097] he[G1487] knows[G1097] anything,[G5100] he[G1487] doesn’t[G3756] yet[G3768] know[G1097] as[G2531] he[G1487] ought[G1163] to[G1163] know.[G1097]
3
But if anyone loves God, the same is known by him.
But[G1161] anyone[G5100] who[G3588] loves[G25] God[G2316] is[G3588] known[G1097] by[G5259] him.[G3588]
4
Therefore concerning the eating of things sacrificed to idols, we know that no idol is anything in the world, and that there is no other God but one.
Therefore[G3767] concerning[G4012] the[G1722] eating[G1035] of[G4012] things[G3588] sacrificed[G1494] to[G2532] idols,[G1497] we[G3754] know[G1492] that[G3754] no[G3762] idol[G1497] is[G3588] anything[G3762] in[G1722] the[G1722] world,[G2889] and[G2532] that[G3754] there[G2532] is[G3588] no[G3762] other[G1520] God[G2316] but[G2532] one.[G1520]
5
For though there are things that are called “gods”, whether in the heavens or on earth; as there are many “gods” and many “lords”;
For[G1063] though[G2532] there[G2532] are[G1510] things[G4183] that[G2532] are[G1510] called[G3004] “gods”,[G2316] whether[G1535] in[G1722] the[G1722] heavens[G3772] or[G1535] on[G1909] earth[G1093] —as[G5618] there[G2532] are[G1510] many[G4183] “gods[G2316] ” and[G2532] many[G4183] “lords ”—[G2962]
6
yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and we live through him.
yet[G2532] to[G1519] us[G1519] there[G2532] is[G3588] one[G1520] God,[G2316] the[G2532] Father,[G3962] of[G1537] whom[G3739] are[G3588] all[G3956] things,[G3956] and[G2532] we[G2249] for[G1519] him;[G3588] and[G2532] one[G1520] Lord,[G2962] Jesus[G2424] Christ,[G5547] through[G1223] whom[G3739] are[G3588] all[G3956] things,[G3956] and[G2532] we[G2249] live[G2532] through[G1223] him.[G3588]
7
However, that knowledge isn’t in all men. But some, with consciousness of the idol until now, eat as of a thing sacrificed to an idol, and their conscience, being weak, is defiled.
However,[G1161] that[G3588] knowledge[G1108] isn’t[G3756] in[G1722] all[G3956] men.[G3956] But[G1161] some,[G5100] with[G1722] consciousness[G4893] of[G2532] an[G2532] idol[G1497] until[G2193] now,[G1161] eat[G2068] as[G5613] of[G2532] a[G5613] thing[G5100] sacrificed[G1494] to[G2532] an[G2532] idol,[G1497] and[G2532] their[G2532] conscience,[G4893] being[G1510] weak,[G770] is[G1510] defiled.[G3435]
8
But food will not commend us to God. For neither, if we don’t eat, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better.
But[G1161] food[G1033] will[G2316] not[G3756] commend[G3936] us[G2249] to[G3756] God.[G2316] For[G1063] neither,[G3777] if[G1437] we[G2249] don’t[G3756] eat[G2068] are[G3588] we[G2249] the[G1161] worse,[G5302] nor[G3777] if[G1437] we[G2249] eat[G2068] are[G3588] we[G2249] the[G1161] better.[G4052]
9
But be careful that by no means does this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to the weak.
But[G1161] be[G1096] careful[G991] that[G3588] by[G1096] no[G3361] means[G3381] does[G1096] this[G3778] liberty[G1849] of[G3588] yours[G4771] become[G1096] a[G1096] stumbling[G4348] block[G4348] to[G1849] the[G1161] weak.[G770]
10
For if a man sees you who have knowledge sitting in an idol’s temple, won’t his conscience, if he is weak, be emboldened to eat things sacrificed to idols?
For[G1063] if[G1437] a[G2192] man[G5100] sees[G3708] you[G4771] who[G3588] have[G2192] knowledge[G1108] sitting[G2621] in[G1722] an[G2192] idol’s[G1493] temple,[G1493] won’t[G3780] his[G1519] conscience,[G4893] if[G1437] he[G3588] is[G1510] weak,[G770] be[G1510] emboldened[G3618] to[G1519] eat[G2068] things[G3588] sacrificed[G1494] to[G1519] idols?[G1494]
11
And through your knowledge, he who is weak perishes, the brother for whose sake Christ died.
And[G3588] through[G1223] your[G4674] knowledge,[G1108] he[G3739] who[G3739] is[G3588] weak[G770] perishes,[G622] the[G1722] brother[G80] for[G1063] whose[G3739] sake[G1223] Christ[G5547] died.[G3588]
12
Thus, sinning against the brothers, and wounding their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ.
Thus,[G3779] sinning[G264] against[G1519] the[G2532] brothers,[G80] and[G2532] wounding[G5180] their[G2532] conscience[G4893] when[G1161] it[G2532] is[G3588] weak,[G770] you[G3779] sin[G266] against[G1519] Christ.[G5547]
13
Therefore if food causes my brother to stumble, I will eat no meat forever more, that I don’t cause my brother to stumble.
Therefore,[G1355] if[G1487] food[G1033] causes[G4624] my[G1473] brother[G80] to[G1519] stumble,[G4624] I[G1473] will[G1473] eat[G2068] no[G3756] meat[G1033] forever[G1519] more,[G3756] that[G2443] I[G1473] don’t[G3756] cause[G4624] my[G1473] brother[G80] to[G1519] stumble.[G4624]
