Chapter 15
1
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,
Then[G2532] Pharisees[G5330] and[G2532] scribes[G1122] came[G4334] to[G2532] Jesus[G2424] from[G2532] Jerusalem,[G2414] saying,[G3004]
2
“Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”
Why[G5101] do[G5101] your[G1223] disciples[G3101] disobey[G3845] the[G1223] tradition[G3862] of[G1223] the[G1223] elders?[G4245] For[G1063] they[G3588] don’t[G3756] wash[G3538] their[G2068] hands[G5495] when[G3752] they[G3588] eat[G2068] bread.”[G740]
3
He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?
He[G2532] answered[G3004] them,[G3588] “Why[G5101] do[G5101] you[G5210] also[G2532] disobey[G3845] the[G2532] commandment[G1785] of[G1223] God[G2316] because[G1223] of[G1223] your[G1223] tradition?[G3862]
4
For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[1] and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’[2]
For[G1063] God[G2316] commanded,[G1781] ‘Honor[G5091] your[G5091] father[G3962] and[G2532] your[G5091] mother,’[G3384] and,[G2532] ‘He[G2532] who[G3588] speaks[G3004] evil[G2551] of[G2316] father[G3962] or[G2228] mother,[G3384] let[G1063] him[G3588] be[G2532] put[G5053] to[G2532] death.’[G2288]
5
But you say, ‘Whoever may tell his father or his mother, “Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”
But[G1161] you[G5210] say,[G3004] ‘Whoever[G3739] may[G3004] tell[G3004] his[G3739] father[G3962] or[G2228] his[G3739] mother,[G3384] “Whatever[G3739] help[G5623] you[G5210] might[G5210] otherwise[G1161] have[G1473] gotten[G576] from[G1537] me[G1473] is[G3588] a[G1437] gift[G1435] devoted[G472] to[G3004] God,”[G3004]
6
he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.
he[G2532] shall[G2532] not[G3361] honor[G5091] his[G1223] father[G3962] or[G2532] mother.’[G3384] You[G5210] have[G2532] made[G2316] the[G2532] commandment[G3056] of[G3056] God[G2316] void[G2758] because[G1223] of[G3056] your[G1223] tradition.[G3862]
7
You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
You[G5210] hypocrites![G5273] Well[G2573] did[G2573] Isaiah[G2268] prophesy[G4395] of[G4012] you,[G5210] saying,[G3004]
8
‘These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
These[G3778] people[G2992] draw[G501] near[G1451] to[G1161] me[G1473] with[G2588] their[G3588] mouth,[G4750] and[G1161] honor[G5091] me[G1473] with[G2588] their[G3588] lips;[G5491] but[G1161] their[G3588] heart[G2588] is[G3588] far[G4206] from[G3588] me.[G1473]
9
And in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’ ”[1]
And[G1161] they[G1161] worship[G4576] me[G1473] in[G1161] vain,[G3155] teaching[G1321] as[G1161] doctrine[G1319] rules[G3545] made[G1161] by[G1161] men.’”[G444]
10
He summoned the multitude, and said to them, “Hear, and understand.
He[G2532] summoned[G4341] the[G2532] multitude,[G3793] and[G2532] said[G3004] to[G2532] them,[G3588] “Hear,[G191] and[G2532] understand.[G4920]
11
That which enters into the mouth doesn’t defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man.”
That[G3588] which[G3588] enters[G1525] into[G1519] the[G1519] mouth[G4750] doesn’t[G3756] defile[G2840] the[G1519] man;[G3778] but[G3588] that[G3588] which[G3588] proceeds[G1607] out[G1537] of[G1537] the[G1519] mouth,[G4750] this[G3778] defiles[G2840] the[G1519] man.”[G3778]
12
Then the disciples came, and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?”
Then[G5119] the[G3588] disciples[G3101] came[G4334] and[G4334] said[G3004] to[G3004] him,[G3588] “Do[G1492] you[G3754] know[G1492] that[G3754] the[G3588] Pharisees[G5330] were[G3588] offended[G4624] when[G1492] they[G3588] heard[G191] this[G3588] saying?”[G3004]
13
But he answered, “Every plant which my heavenly Father didn’t plant will be uprooted.
But[G1161] he[G1161] answered,[G3004] “Every[G3956] plant[G5451] which[G3739] my[G3956] heavenly[G3770] Father[G3962] didn’t[G3756] plant[G5451] will[G3739] be[G3756] uprooted.[G1610]
14
Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit.”
Leave[G863] them[G1438] alone.[G1438] They[G1161] are[G1510] blind[G5185] guides[G3595] of[G1519] the[G1519] blind.[G5185] If[G1437] the[G1519] blind[G5185] guide[G3594] the[G1519] blind,[G5185] both[G1161] will[G1510] fall[G4098] into[G1519] a[G1519] pit.”[G5421]
15
Peter answered him, “Explain the parable to us.”
Peter[G4074] answered[G3004] him,[G3588] “Explain[G5419] the[G1161] parable[G3850] to[G3004] us.”[G3004]
16
So Jesus said, “Do you also still not understand?
So[G2532] Jesus[G3004] said,[G3004] “Do[G2532] you[G5210] also[G2532] still[G2089] not[G1510] understand?[G4920]
17
Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly and then out of the body?
Don’t[G3756] you[G3754] understand[G3539] that[G3754] whatever[G3956] goes[G1531] into[G1519] the[G2532] mouth[G4750] passes[G5562] into[G1519] the[G2532] belly[G2836] and[G2532] then[G2532] out[G1544] of[G2532] the[G2532] body?[G1519]
18
But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.
But[G1161] the[G1537] things[G3588] which[G3588] proceed[G1607] out[G1831] of[G1537] the[G1537] mouth[G4750] come[G1831] out[G1831] of[G1537] the[G1537] heart,[G2588] and[G1161] they[G1161] defile[G2840] the[G1537] man.[G2588]
19
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.
For[G1063] out[G1831] of[G1537] the[G1537] heart[G2588] come[G1831] evil[G4190] thoughts,[G1261] murders,[G5408] adulteries,[G3430] sexual[G4202] sins,[G266] thefts,[G2829] false[G5577] testimony,[G5577] and[G1831] blasphemies.[G988]
20
These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn’t defile the man.”
These[G3778] are[G1510] the[G1161] things[G3778] which[G3588] defile[G2840] the[G1161] man;[G3778] but[G1161] to[G3756] eat[G2068] with[G5495] unwashed[G449] hands[G5495] doesn’t[G3756] defile[G2840] the[G1161] man.”[G3778]
21
Jesus went out from there and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon.
Jesus[G2424] went[G1831] out[G1831] from[G2532] there[G2532] and[G2532] withdrew[G2424] into[G1519] the[G2532] region[G3725] of[G2532] Tyre[G5184] and[G2532] Sidon.[G4605]
22
Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!”
Behold,[G2400] a[G2532] Canaanite[G5478] woman[G1135] came[G1831] out[G1831] from[G2532] those[G3588] borders[G3725] and[G2532] cried,[G2896] saying,[G3004] “Have[G2532] mercy[G1653] on[G1653] me,[G1473] Lord,[G2962] you[G3708] son[G5207] of[G5207] David![G1138] My[G3708] daughter[G2364] is[G3588] severely[G664] possessed[G2192] by[G2532] a[G2532] demon!”[G1140]
23
But he answered her not a word. His disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away; for she cries after us.”
But[G1161] he[G2532] answered[G3004] her[G1438] not[G3756] a[G2532] word.[G3056] His[G1438] disciples[G3101] came[G4334] and[G2532] begged[G2065] him,[G3588] saying,[G3004] “Send[G3992] her[G1438] away;[G142] for[G3754] she[G2532] cries[G2896] after[G1161] us.”[G3004]
24
But he answered, “I wasn’t sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”
But[G1161] he[G1161] answered,[G3004] “I[G1161] wasn’t[G3756] sent[G649] to[G1519] anyone[G5100] but[G1161] the[G1519] lost[G622] sheep[G4263] of[G3624] the[G1519] house[G3624] of[G3624] Israel.”[G2474]
25
But she came and worshiped him, saying, “Lord, help me.”
But[G1161] she[G1161] came[G2064] and[G1161] worshiped[G4352] him,[G3588] saying,[G3004] “Lord,[G2962] help[G997] me.”[G1473]
26
But he answered, “It is not appropriate to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.”
But[G1161] he[G2532] answered,[G3004] “It[G2532] is[G1510] not[G3756] appropriate[G514] to[G2532] take[G2983] the[G2532] children’s[G5043] bread[G740] and[G2532] throw[G906] it[G2532] to[G2532] the[G2532] dogs.”[G2952]
27
But she said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
But[G1161] she[G2532] said,[G3004] “Yes,[G3483] Lord,[G2962] but[G1161] even[G2532] the[G2532] dogs[G2952] eat[G2068] the[G2532] crumbs[G5589] which[G3588] fall[G4098] from[G2532] their[G2532] masters’[G2962] table.”[G5132]
28
Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire.” And her daughter was healed from that hour.
Then[G2532] Jesus[G2424] answered[G3004] her,[G3588] “Woman,[G1135] great[G3173] is[G3588] your[G2532] faith![G4102] Be[G1096] it[G2532] done[G1096] to[G2532] you[G4771] even[G2532] as[G5613] you[G4771] desire.”[G2309] And[G2532] her[G3588] daughter[G2364] was[G1096] healed[G2390] from[G2532] that[G3588] hour.[G5610]
29
Jesus departed from there and came near to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain and sat there.
Jesus[G2424] departed[G3327] from[G3844] there[G1563] and[G2532] came[G2064] near[G1519] to[G1519] the[G2532] sea[G2281] of[G2532] Galilee;[G1056] and[G2532] he[G2532] went[G2064] up[G1519] on[G1519] the[G2532] mountain[G3735] and[G2532] sat[G2521] there.[G1563]
30
Great multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others, and they put them down at his feet. He healed them,
Great[G4183] multitudes[G3793] came[G4334] to[G2532] him,[G3588] having[G2192] with[G3326] them[G3588] the[G2532] lame,[G5560] blind,[G5185] mute,[G2974] maimed,[G2948] and[G2532] many[G4183] others,[G2087] and[G2532] they[G2532] put[G2532] them[G3588] down[G4496] at[G3844] his[G1438] feet.[G4228] He[G2532] healed[G2323] them,[G3588]
31
so that the multitude wondered when they saw the mute speaking, the injured healed, the lame walking, and the blind seeing—and they glorified the God of Israel.
so[G2532] that[G3588] the[G2532] multitude[G3793] wondered[G2296] when[G2532] they[G2532] saw[G1492] the[G2532] mute[G2974] speaking,[G2980] the[G2532] injured[G91] healed,[G5199] the[G2532] lame[G5560] walking,[G4043] and[G2532] the[G2532] blind[G5185] seeing[G3708] —and[G2532] they[G2532] glorified[G1392] the[G2532] God[G2316] of[G2316] Israel.[G2474]
32
Jesus summoned his disciples and said, “I have compassion on the multitude, because they have continued with me now three days and have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away fasting, or they might faint on the way.”
Jesus[G2424] summoned[G4341] his[G1438] disciples[G3101] and[G2532] said,[G3004] “I[G1473] have[G2192] compassion[G4697] on[G1909] the[G1722] multitude,[G3793] because[G3754] they[G2532] have[G2192] continued[G1961] with[G1722] me[G1473] now[G1161] three[G5140] days[G2250] and[G2532] have[G2192] nothing[G3756] to[G2532] eat.[G2068] I[G1473] don’t[G3756] want[G2309] to[G2532] send[G3992] them[G3588] away[G142] fasting,[G3523] or[G2532] they[G2532] might[G2532] faint[G1590] on[G1909] the[G1722] way.”[G3598]
33
The disciples said to him, “Where could we get so many loaves in a deserted place as to satisfy so great a multitude?”
The[G1722] disciples[G3101] said[G3004] to[G2532] him,[G3588] “Where[G4159] could[G3588] we[G2249] get[G2532] so[G2532] many[G5118] loaves[G740] in[G1722] a[G2532] deserted[G1459] place[G2047] as[G1722] to[G2532] satisfy[G5526] so[G2532] great[G5118] a[G2532] multitude?”[G3793]
34
Jesus said to them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, “Seven, and a few small fish.”
Jesus[G2424] said[G3004] to[G2532] them,[G3588] “How[G4214] many[G4214] loaves[G740] do[G2532] you[G3004] have?”[G2192] They[G2532] said,[G3004] “Seven,[G2033] and[G2532] a[G2192] few[G3641] small[G3641] fish.”[G2485]
35
He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;
He[G2532] commanded[G3853] the[G2532] multitude[G3793] to[G2532] sit[G2521] down[G2597] on[G1909] the[G2532] ground;[G1093]
36
and he took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks and broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.
and[G2532] he[G2532] took[G2983] the[G2532] seven[G2033] loaves[G740] and[G2532] the[G2532] fish.[G2486] He[G2532] gave[G1325] thanks[G2168] and[G2532] broke[G2806] them,[G3588] and[G2532] gave[G1325] to[G2532] the[G2532] disciples,[G3101] and[G2532] the[G2532] disciples[G3101] to[G2532] the[G2532] multitudes.[G3793]
37
They all ate and were filled. They took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.
They[G2532] all[G3956] ate[G2068] and[G2532] were[G3588] filled.[G5526] They[G2532] took[G2532] up[G2532] seven[G2033] baskets[G4711] full[G4134] of[G2532] the[G2532] broken[G2801] pieces[G2801] that[G3588] were[G3588] left[G4052] over.[G4052]
38
Those who ate were four thousand men, in addition to women and children.
Those[G3588] who[G3588] ate[G2068] were[G1510] four[G5070] thousand[G5070] men,[G3588] in[G2532] addition to[G2532] women[G1135] and[G2532] children.[G3813]
39
Then he sent away the multitudes, got into the boat, and came into the borders of Magdala.
Then[G2532] he[G2532] sent[G2532] away[G142] the[G2532] multitudes,[G3793] got[G1684] into[G1519] the[G2532] boat,[G4143] and[G2532] came[G2064] into[G1519] the[G2532] borders[G3725] of[G2532] Magdala.[G3093]
Chapter
1
Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,
2
“Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don’t wash their hands when they eat bread.”
3
He answered them, “Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?
4
For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’[1] and, ‘He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.’[2]
5
But you say, ‘Whoever may tell his father or his mother, “Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,”
6
he shall not honor his father or mother.’ You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.
7
You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,
8
‘These people draw near to me with their mouth, and honor me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
9
And in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrine rules made by men.’ ”[1]
10
He summoned the multitude, and said to them, “Hear, and understand.
