Chapter 2

2.1
He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me.
2.2
Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice.
3.1
For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.
4.1
I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
5.1
The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
6.1
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains.
6.2
The earth barred me in forever:
6.3
yet you have brought my life up from the pit, Yahweh my God.
7.1
“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh.
7.2
My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
8.1
Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”
10.1
Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.

Chapter 3

1.1
Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”

Chapter 2

1
Then Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish’s belly.
Then[H1961] Jonah[H3124] prayed[H6419] to[H3068] Yahweh,[H3068] his[H3068] God,[H3068] out[H1419] of[H3068] the[H3068] fish’s[H1710] belly.[H4578]
2

He said, “I called because of my affliction to Yahweh. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol[1] I cried. You heard my voice.

He[H3068] said,[H559] “I[H3068] called[H7121] because[H3068] of[H3068] my[H3068] affliction[H6040] to[H3068] Yahweh.[H3068] He[H3068] answered[H6030] me.[H413] Out[H3318] of[H3068] the[H3068] belly[H4578] of[H3068] Sheol[H7585] I[H3068] cried.[H7121] You[H6419] heard[H8085] my[H3068] voice.[H6963]
3
For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your waves and your billows passed over me.
For[H7121] you[H6030] threw[H7993] me[H7121] into[H413] the[H8085] depths,[H8415] in[H3068] the[H8085] heart[H8085] of[H3068] the[H8085] seas.[H3220] The[H8085] flood[H3999] was[H3068] all[H7121] around[H5439] me.[H7121] All[H7121] your[H3068] waves[H1530] and[H3068] your[H3068] billows[H1530] passed[H3068] over[H3068] me.[H7121]
4
I said, ‘I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.’
I[H5921] said,[H559] ‘I[H5921] have[H5104] been[H5674] banished[H5080] from[H5921] your[H3605] sight;[H5869] yet[H3605] I[H5921] will[H3824] look[H7200] again[H5437] toward[H5921] your[H3605] holy[H6944] temple.’[H1004]
5
The waters surrounded me, even to the soul. The deep was around me. The weeds were wrapped around my head.
The[H3254] waters[H4325] surrounded[H5437] me,[H3254] even[H3254] to[H5869] the[H3254] soul.[H5315] The[H3254] deep[H8415] was[H3068] around[H5439] me.[H3254] The[H3254] weeds[H5488] were[H5869] wrapped[H3874] around[H5439] my[H5048] head.[H7218]
6

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet you have brought my life up from the pit, Yahweh my God.

I[H5704] went[H5437] down[H5437] to[H5704] the[H5704] bottoms[H7095] of[H7218] the[H5704] mountains.[H2022] The[H5704] earth[H776] barred me[H5315] in[H5315] forever;[H5704] yet[H5704] you[H5704] have[H4325] brought[H5437] my[H5704] life[H5315] up[H2280] from[H5315] the[H5704] pit,[H953] Yahweh[H3068] my[H5704] God.[H430]
7

“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Yahweh. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.

When[H3068] my[H3068] soul[H5315] fainted[H5968] within[H1157] me,[H1157] I[H3068] remembered[H2142] Yahweh.[H3068] My[H3068] prayer[H8605] came[H5927] in[H3068] to[H3381] you,[H3381] into[H3381] your[H3068] holy[H6944] temple.[H1004]
8

Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy.

Those[H5921] who[H3068] regard[H5921] vain[H7723] idols[H1544] forsake[H5800] their[H3068] own[H5315] mercy.[H3068]
9

But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to Yahweh.”

But[H5800] I[H589] will[H2617] sacrifice[H2077] to[H8104] you[H5800] with[H5973] the[H8104] voice[H6963] of[H1892] thanksgiving.[H8426] I[H589] will[H2617] pay[H8104] that[H7723] which[H2617] I[H589] have[H8104] vowed.[H5087] Salvation[H3444] belongs[H1961] to[H8104] Yahweh.”[H3068]
10
Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.
Then[H3068] Yahweh[H3068] spoke[H1696] to[H3068] the[H3068] fish,[H1710] and[H3068] it[H7999] vomited[H7006] out[H3318] Jonah[H3124] on[H3068] the[H3068] dry[H3004] land.[H776]

Chapter 3

1

Yahweh’s word came to Jonah the second time, saying,

2
“Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I give you.”
3
So Jonah arose, and went to Nineveh, according to Yahweh’s word. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days’ journey across.
4
Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he cried out, and said, “In forty days, Nineveh will be overthrown!”
5
The people of Nineveh believed God; and they proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from their greatest even to their least.
6
The news reached the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and took off his royal robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
7
He made a proclamation and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, “Let neither man nor animal, herd nor flock, taste anything; let them not feed, nor drink water;
8
but let them be covered with sackcloth, both man and animal, and let them cry mightily to God. Yes, let them turn everyone from his evil way, and from the violence that is in his hands.
9
Who knows whether God will not turn and relent, and turn away from his fierce anger, so that we might not perish?”
10
God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way. God relented of the disaster which he said he would do to them, and he didn’t do it.
