Chapter 53

1.1
Who has believed our message? To whom has Yahweh’s arm been revealed?
2.1
For he grew up before him as a tender plant,
2.2
and as a root out of dry ground.
2.3
He has no good looks or majesty. When we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.
3.1
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease.
3.2
He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him. Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering;
4.1
yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.
5.1
But he was pierced for our transgressions.
5.2
He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.
6.1
All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way;
6.2
and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
7.1
He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn’t open his mouth.
7.2
As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he didn’t open his mouth.
8.1
He was taken away by oppression and judgment.
8.2
As for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living and stricken for the disobedience of my people? They made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.
10.1
Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer.
10.2
When you make his soul an offering for sin, he will see his offspring.
10.3
He will prolong his days and Yahweh’s pleasure will prosper in his hand.
11.1
After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light and be satisfied. My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself; and he will bear their iniquities.
12.1
Therefore I will give him a portion with the great. He will divide the plunder with the strong;
12.2
because he poured out his soul to death and was counted with the transgressors;
12.3
yet he bore the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

Chapter 54

1.1
Sing, barren, you who didn’t give birth;
1.2
break out into singing, and cry aloud, you who didn’t travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife,” says Yahweh.
2.1
“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your habitations;
3.1
don’t spare: lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes. For you will spread out on the right hand and on the left; and your offspring will possess the nations and settle in desolate cities.
4.1
“Don’t be afraid, for you will not be ashamed.
4.2
Don’t be confounded, for you will not be disappointed.
4.3
For you will forget the shame of your youth.
4.4
You will remember the reproach of your widowhood no more. For your Maker is your husband; Yahweh of Armies is his name.
5.1
The Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer.
5.2
He will be called the God of the whole earth. For Yahweh has called you as a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit,

Chapter 53

1

Who has believed our message? To whom has Yahweh’s arm been revealed?

Who[H4310] has[H3068] believed[H539] our[H3068] message?[H8052] To[H3068] whom[H4310] has[H3068] Yahweh’s[H3068] arm[H2220] been[H3068] revealed?[H1540]
2

For he grew up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He has no good looks or majesty. When we see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

For[H6440] he[H3808] grew[H5927] up[H5927] before[H6440] him[H6440] as[H5927] a[H7200] tender[H3126] plant,[H3126] and[H6440] as[H5927] a[H7200] root[H8328] out[H7200] of[H6440] dry[H6723] ground.[H6440] He[H3808] has[H3068] no[H3808] good[H6440] looks[H7200] or[H3808] majesty.[H1926] When[H7200] we[H7200] see[H7200] him,[H6440] there[H5927] is[H6440] no[H3808] beauty[H1926] that[H7200] we[H7200] should[H3068] desire[H2530] him.[H6440]
3

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering and acquainted with disease. He was despised as one from whom men hide their face; and we didn’t respect him.

He[H4480] was[H2483] despised[H959] and[H6440] rejected[H2310] by[H6440] men,[H2803] a[H4480] man[H3045] of[H6440] suffering[H6040] and[H6440] acquainted[H3045] with[H6440] disease.[H2483] He[H4480] was[H2483] despised[H959] as[H2803] one[H3808] from[H4480] whom[H6440] men[H2803] hide[H4564] their[H6440] face;[H6440] and[H6440] we[H4480] didn’t[H3808] respect[H3045] him.[H6440]
4

Surely he has borne our sickness and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.

Surely[H5221] he[H1931] has[H1931] borne[H5375] our[H5375] sickness[H2483] and[H2483] carried[H5375] our[H5375] suffering;[H6040] yet[H5750] we[H587] considered[H2803] him[H5221] plagued,[H5060] struck[H5221] by[H2483] God,[H430] and[H2483] afflicted.[H6031]
5

But he was pierced for our transgressions. He was crushed for our iniquities. The punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

But[H1931] he[H1931] was[H1931] pierced[H2490] for[H5921] our[H5921] transgressions.[H6588] He[H1931] was[H1931] crushed[H1792] for[H5921] our[H5921] iniquities.[H5771] The[H5921] punishment[H5771] that[H1931] brought[H935] our[H5921] peace[H7965] was[H1931] on[H5921] him;[H5921] and[H7965] by[H5921] his[H5921] wounds[H2250] we[H587] are[H6588] healed.[H7495]
6

All we like sheep have gone astray. Everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

All[H3605] we[H3605] like[H1870] sheep[H6629] have[H3068] gone[H8582] astray.[H8582] Everyone[H3605] has[H3068] turned[H6437] to[H3068] his[H3605] own[H1961] way;[H1870] and[H3068] Yahweh[H3068] has[H3068] laid[H6293] on[H1870] him[H3605] the[H3605] iniquity[H5771] of[H3068] us[H6629] all.[H3605]
7
He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn’t open his mouth. As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he didn’t open his mouth.
He[H1931] was[H1931] oppressed,[H5065] yet[H3808] when[H6310] he[H1931] was[H1931] afflicted[H6031] he[H1931] didn’t[H3808] open[H6605] his[H6440] mouth.[H6310] As[H6440] a[H6440] lamb[H7716] that[H1931] is[H1931] led[H2986] to[H6440] the[H6440] slaughter,[H2874] and[H6440] as[H6440] a[H6440] sheep[H7716] that[H1931] before[H6440] its[H6605] shearers[H1494] is[H1931] silent,[H6310] so[H3808] he[H1931] didn’t[H3808] open[H6605] his[H6440] mouth.[H6310]
8

He was taken away by oppression and judgment. As for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living and stricken for the disobedience of my people?

He[H3588] was[H5971] taken[H3947] away[H3947] by[H3588] oppression[H6115] and[H4941] judgment.[H4941] As[H3588] for[H3588] his[H3947] generation,[H1755] who[H4310] considered[H7878] that[H3588] he[H3588] was[H5971] cut[H1504] off[H1504] out[H3947] of[H5971] the[H3588] land[H776] of[H5971] the[H3588] living[H2416] and[H4941] stricken[H5061] for[H3588] the[H3588] disobedience of[H6588] my[H3947] people?[H5971]
9

They made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, nor was any deceit in his mouth.

They[H5921] made[H6213] his[H5414] grave[H6913] with[H6213] the[H5921] wicked,[H7563] and[H6213] with[H6213] a[H6213] rich[H6223] man[H7563] in[H5921] his[H5414] death,[H4194] although[H3808] he[H6213] had[H5414] done[H6213] no[H3808] violence,[H2555] nor[H3808] was[H6310] any[H6213] deceit[H4820] in[H5921] his[H5414] mouth.[H6310]
10

Yet it pleased Yahweh to bruise him. He has caused him to suffer. When you make his soul an offering for sin, he will see his offspring. He will prolong his days and Yahweh’s pleasure will prosper in his hand.

Yet[H3068] it[H7760] pleased[H2654] Yahweh[H3068] to[H3068] bruise[H1792] him.[H3027] He[H3117] has[H3068] caused[H5414] him[H3027] to[H3068] suffer.[H5414] When[H3117] you[H3117] make[H7760] his[H3068] soul[H5315] an[H7760] offering[H3068] for[H3027] sin,[H2403] he[H3117] will[H3068] see[H7200] his[H3068] offspring.[H2233] He[H3117] will[H3068] prolong[H748] his[H3068] days[H3117] and[H3068] Yahweh’s[H3068] pleasure[H2656] will[H3068] prosper[H6743] in[H3068] his[H3068] hand.[H3027]
11

After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light[1] and be satisfied. My righteous servant will justify many by the knowledge of himself; and he will bear their iniquities.

After[H5315] the[H7200] suffering[H6040] of[H5650] his[H7200] soul,[H5315] he[H1931] will[H5650] see[H7200] the[H7200] light[H216] and[H5650] be[H5315] satisfied.[H7646] My[H7200] righteous[H6662] servant[H5650] will[H5650] justify[H6663] many[H7227] by[H6662] the[H7200] knowledge[H1847] of[H5650] himself;[H5315] and[H5650] he[H1931] will[H5650] bear[H5445] their[H7200] iniquities.[H5771]
12

Therefore I will give him a portion with the great. He will divide the plunder with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death and was counted with the transgressors; yet he bore the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors.

Therefore[H3651] I[H3651] will[H5315] give[H5375] him[H1931] a[H5375] portion[H2505] with[H5315] the[H5375] great.[H7227] He[H1931] will[H5315] divide[H2505] the[H5375] plunder[H7998] with[H5315] the[H5375] strong,[H6099] because[H8478] he[H1931] poured[H6168] out[H2505] his[H5375] soul[H5315] to[H5315] death[H4194] and[H5315] was[H1931] counted[H4487] with[H5315] the[H5375] transgressors;[H6586] yet[H3651] he[H1931] bore[H5375] the[H5375] sins[H2399] of[H8478] many[H7227] and[H5315] made[H6168] intercession[H6293] for[H8478] the[H5375] transgressors.[H6586]

Chapter 54

1

“Sing, barren, you who didn’t give birth; break out into singing, and cry aloud, you who didn’t travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife,” says Yahweh.

2

“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your habitations; don’t spare: lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes.

3

For you will spread out on the right hand and on the left; and your offspring will possess the nations and settle in desolate cities.

4
“Don’t be afraid, for you will not be ashamed. Don’t be confounded, for you will not be disappointed. For you will forget the shame of your youth. You will remember the reproach of your widowhood no more.
5

For your Maker is your husband; Yahweh of Armies is his name. The Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth.

6
For Yahweh has called you as a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, even a wife of youth, when she is cast off,” says your God.
7

“For a small moment I have forsaken you, but I will gather you with great mercies.

8

In overflowing wrath I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting loving kindness I will have mercy on you,” says Yahweh your Redeemer.

9
“For this is like the waters of Noah to me; for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah will no more go over the earth, so I have sworn that I will not be angry with you, nor rebuke you.
10

For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed; but my loving kindness will not depart from you, and my covenant of peace will not be removed,” says Yahweh who has mercy on you.
